Master of Education with ESL Concentration

The Department cooperates with the Educational Leadership Department in offering the Master of Education Degree with an ESL (English as a Second Language) concentration (PreK-12).

The ESL program is designed as a concentration for Master's of Education (M. Ed.) Degree majoring in curriculum and instruction, or endorsement for M. Ed. Degree holders seeking 'add-on' certification. Persons seeking the degree must already have teacher certification. The program includes a full course of study, including teaching practica geared specifically at the teaching of ESL at all grade levels. Add-on Endorsement in ESL (Tennessee Licensure)

The program for teaching ESL conforms to State of Tennessee licensure standards for teachers of English as a Second language. The dynamic, interdisciplinary, cross-curricular program combines resources in several departments across campus and requires students to take courses in linguistics, foreign language acquisition, and English as well as teaching strategies and methods appropriate for the ESL classroom.
