Master of Arts in Teaching
M.A.T. IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

A. GENERAL INFORMATION

- The M.A.T. Program in Foreign Languages consists of 33 semester hours of
courses for students already licensed to teach (or not seeking licensure) or
60 hours for
master's candidates seeking licensure. Courses are composed of the following:
- Foreign Language courses and courses in major language -21 hrs.
- Education courses - 12 hrs. (39 hrs. for those seeking licensure)
- 70% of graduate hours must be at the 6000 level.
- Graduates will be able to teach on the elementary, secondary, or college
level if they meet the requirements of the appropriate department of the
College of Education.
- The M.A.T. in Foreign Languages is available to students seeking to teach
at either
the elementary or the secondary level. Students expecting to teach at the
secondary level may take either the licensure or non-licensure options.
However, students planning to teach at the elementary level are expected to
enter the program already licensed to teach and will, therefore, take the
non-licensure option in the program.
B. REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO THE M.A.T. PROGRAM
- 24 undergraduate semester hours in the major foreign language. Up to six
hours of this credit requirement may be taken while enrolled in the program;
- A baccalaurate degree with a grade point average that meets College of
Graduate
Studies requirements;
- A combined score of 900 on the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) --- verbal and
quantitative components;
NOTE: Students must take the GRE before completing the first semester or it
will be necessary to re-apply;
- Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0;
- Score of Intermediate High or better on on oral
proficiency exam administered by the department;
- Submit a timed writing sample;
- Submit TWO letters of recommendation.
C. PROCEDURE
- Complete Application Form to Graduate Admissions (in back of Graduate
Catalog), and supply requested information (transcripts, GRE scores, etc.)
- Contact the graduate advisor (Dr. Richard E. Morris at rmorris@mtsu.edu) in the Department of Foreign Languages for
information on the M.A.T. Program.
- Read the requirements outlined in the M.A.T. section and the Foreign
Languages
section of the Graduate Catalog.

D. OTHER REQUIREMENTS OF THE COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES
- Complete Admission to Candidacy Form before the completion of 24 hours of
graduate study. (See p. 41 of current graduate catalogue.)
- File an Intent to Graduate Form at the appropriate time. See the graduate
catalog
for deadlines.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE M.A.T. IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE
A. FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS: 21 Hours
- 6 core graduate
hours, including
- FL 6990: Teaching internship;
- FL 5500: Introduction to Teaching Foreign Language
Methodology
- 6 hours core electives taken from
- FL 6010: Foreign language acquisition: Theories and
practices
- FL 6700: Introduction to linguistics;
- FL 6900: (Topics vary)
- 12 hours in language emphasis courses,
which include
- FREN, GERM or SPAN 6000, and
- 9 hours of German/French/or Spanish 5000 or 6000-level
courses
- Exams:
- Written Comprehensive Exam in the major area of emphasis. Topics
may cover the
following: language, teaching methods, literature, linguistics, and culture.
- Oral Proficiency Exam: Students must achieve an oral proficiency
level of at least
"Advanced" on a scale much like that of ACTFL.
- Reading Exam in a Foreign Language other than Candidate’s Major
Language.
Alternatively, candidate can make a grade of B (83%) or better in the Techniques
of Translation
course (French 5900, German 5900, or Spanish 5920).

ext.2877. Take a copy
of your transcript with you. All education courses must be approved by her
office in conjunction with the Department of Educational Leadership.
Students following the elementary education track must be certified prior to
admission.
